Newcastle has been a popular choice for students for a number of years, and who can blame them it’s brilliant! The city has it all to offer – beautiful architecture, friendly Geordie culture, and abundant nightlife. It was even named one of the happiest cities in the UK last year! Whether you have recently moved to the city as a student or you are in your second or third year of a degree at Newcastle or Northumbria University, finding a student property in an area you are not familiar with can often feel daunting. Finding a student property can involve organising a group of friends to get together or moving into a spare room in an already established flat and let’s face it, getting it right can often be tricky.
However, do not fret because Newcastle has something for everyone! Thankfully, as an area famed for its extensive student population, the city has an endless supply of student housing and an array of options for all budgets! So, if you’re struggling to decide where to set up home here is the Newcastle Student Housing expert guide to the top three student areas in the beautiful city of Newcastle….
Jesmond is without a doubt the place to be when it comes to student accommodation in Newcastle. The area is only 10-20 minutes walk to the city centre and university campuses and has great transport links including Jesmond Metro and Haymarket Bus Station. At the epicentre of this student hub is Acorn Road and Brentwood Avenue which have a rich selection of amenities including local shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and cafés. Around the corner is the infamous Osbourne Road which is a student favorite for its bar culture. The area is stylish and upmarket and has a diverse mix of student and non-student inhabitants. If you are looking to rent a student property Jesmond can carry one of the more hefty price tags with rents typically landing around £70 to £90 per person per week.
Another extremely popular student area is Sandyford, located between the city centre and Jesmond. Again, it’s a convenient 10-minute walk into the city centre and is close enough to the hustle and bustle whilst also proving a little more space and tranquility. The area is also home to the popular Sandyford bars As You Like It and The Holy Hobo. Rental properties for students in Sandyford are often slightly cheaper than those in the city centre and Jesmond at around £65 to £75 per person per week, helping those with a tighter student budget.
Finally, Heaton is another great option for students looking to rent in Newcastle. Situated on the East of the city centre, it is further away from both Newcastle and Northumbria University, however, makes for substantially lower rent prices. Despite the distance, commuting from Heaton to the city centre is hassle-free with regular Metro and bus links. Plus, if you’re studying at Northumbria’s Coach Lane Campus Heaton is an ideal spot. As the area now has a bustling student community due to the low cost of student accommodation in Heaton there is a great student social life around the hub of Chillingham Road. Chillingham Road is Heatons main road and is home to a number of independent retailers, student pubs, cafes, and restaurants like the well-loved The Butterfly Cabinet and Naked Deli. Rents in Heaton typically range from £55 to £65 per person per week, making it the most economical of these three areas.
These location hotspots are the top student areas for rental accommodation in Newcastle and make for a great choice for first time or longtime student renters.
